The Tech Futures Lab team is genuinely passionate about learning, teaching and the future. We are a network of approachable, humble, supportive and open-minded people who look at the world from a different angle.
Deborah has true empathy for the student experience – and it’s her goal to ensure each and every student at Tech Futures Lab feels that wrap around support that’s so essential to positive learning experiences.
As a graduate of language studies in German, French and Te Reo Maori, Deborah connects with the vulnerability that comes when putting oneself into new unfamiliar spaces. She holds amongst other qualifications a Bachelor of German Language and Literature and a Master of Teaching English as a Second or Other Language. It’s this lived learning experience that has given Deborah great appreciation of the entire student experience.
Born in Canterbury, Deborah spent 17 years away from New Zealand living and raising a family with her dutch husband in the Netherlands. When she brought her family back to New Zealand in 2010, she was quickly scooped up by the University of Auckland English Language Academy (ELA) as an English tutor and worked her way up to head the General English division of the ELA. Despite this role on paper being about academic support, Deborah found it was much more about pastoral care and a real compassion for the very fact that personal life and experience play an integral role in academic performance.
As Director of Studies for both Tech Futures Lab and sister company The Mind Lab, Deborah brings a focus to creating safe, inclusive learning experiences that encourage all students to explore and flourish, so they themselves can go out into the world to positively impact others.
