Student Support Services

Tech Futures Lab is committed to creating an inclusive learning environment and working alongside all students to support them through their studies. This support includes educational and learning support, as well as different types of non-educational support. Our close relationship with The Mind Lab means our student support service teams are one in the same, providing a benefit in consistency of service, experience and understanding of what's of value to students. The teams work closely with each other and the academic programme teams to provide a friendly point of contact in person, online or on the phone to help students navigate their learning journey.

Our learners are at the heart of everything we do here at Tech Futures Lab. We take all student concerns extremely seriously. The Student Experience Team includes the Enrolments Team, Portal Team, and the National Academic Registrar; they are accessible to students in person, or via email or phone.  For enrolled students, the Academic Programme Teams or Programme Leads are the first point of contact, working with students to support them, or provide details for others who can support. They are most accessible to students via online platforms such as Slack, or using video conference tools such as Zoom.

Applicants to Tech Futures Lab programmes receive assistance from the Enrolments Team to access their enrolment information and guide them through application, enrolment, and fees. Additionally, enrolled students can get one-on-one assistance on re-enrolment, variations on enrolment, refunds and withdrawals if they encounter circumstances or challenges which are impacting their ability to continue with a programme or course. The team can help with answering application and enrolment queries, filling out student forms, understanding terms and conditions, and processing fee payments.

Tech Futures Lab students can request official academic transcripts, letters to confirm details of their qualifications, and qualification verifications for employers. Students who have completed their programme of study and met the requirements for a qualification can also request a letter of eligibility to graduate before the qualification has been awarded, after final grades have been officially released.

Tech Futures Lab is a multicultural organisation that prioritises opportunities for promoting Māori and Pacific student success in all our programmes. Support for Māori and Pacific students includes academic support, cultural support, te reo Māori support, pastoral guidance and financial support in the form of scholarships and discounts.

Tech Futures Lab students have access to a range of health and wellbeing services via Homecare Medical, who run digital telehealth services, offering health, mental health and addictions support across digital channels. Referrals to other agencies are available for more personal / one on one advice and support. If a student feels that they have any circumstances or impairments that impact on their learning, they are encouraged to speak to their Programme Lead or the National Academic Registrar in the first instance, so that appropriate support systems can be put in place to assist them.

Tech Futures Lab is committed to providing a range of resources and strategies to help students who have provided information and verification of impairment. Potential services available to students with impairments may include things like assistance with academic study due to learning impairments such as dyslexia, sign language interpretation, and so on. Students are encouraged to contact their Programme Lead in the first instance, to privately discuss any impairment-related requirements and establish what would be most beneficial in the context of their programme requirements and delivery model, so that they can be effectively supported throughout the programme.

Library: The Tech Futures Lab E-Library contains links to a range of online resources for students, including the EBSCO and Proquest online databases and e-book libraries that we subscribe to, along with other search engines and open access resources in educational research and scholarship. Support for academic writing, research, literacy development, etc. is available via the Academic Programme Teams.

Learning Communities: Students have access to collaborative learning networks and communities such as Tuia te Kupu and the programme-specific social media platforms and channels. Tuia te Kupu is The Mind Lab & Tech Futures Lab Journal Club and it supports critical conversation about important practice-relevant challenges and opportunities. In addition, Tuia te Kupu helps develop essential critical capability to contextualise knowledge and information in practice.

Learning Consultants: Tech Futures Lab students have access to key staff members outside their programme academic staff, such as the National Academic Director and National Academic Manager, who act as learning consultants to students, helping them develop key academic skills required for postgraduate writing and research, explore approaches to completing their assessments and discover ways of meeting their research and writing goals. Enrolled students receive access to a dedicated collaborative multimedia portal. The Portal team can assist with portal logins, accessing course content and support material, uploading assessments, and getting access to technical help and support.
